Aransas County, Texas: A Genealogical Overview

Nestled on the Texas Gulf Coast, Aransas County is a region defined by the sea, the wind, and a resilient history. From its earliest days as the domain of the Karankawa people to its development as a vital 19th-century port for the Texas cattle industry, the county’s identity has been shaped by its coastal location. Its windswept live oaks, abundant wildlife, and history of seafaring, ranching, and conflict offer a unique and compelling backdrop for genealogical research into the families who settled this distinctive corner of the state.

I. County Formation and Evolution

Aransas County was carved from a single parent county in the post-Civil War era, making the trail of earlier records straightforward for researchers.

  • 1871: County Formed: Aransas County was created and organized in 1871, with the bill officially signed on September 18th.
  • Parent County: It was formed entirely from the coastal territory of Refugio County. All genealogical and land record research for individuals living within the modern boundaries of Aransas County prior to 1871 must be conducted in the records of Refugio County.
  • Subsequent Formations: The county’s boundaries have remained stable since its creation.
  • Name Origin: The county is named for the Rio Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu, a name given to a local river by Spanish explorers in the 18th century. The name, derived from a sanctuary in Spain, was eventually shortened to Aransas and applied to the river, bay, pass, and finally the county.
  • County Seat History: The act that created the county designated Rockport as the county seat. Rockport has served as the sole seat of government throughout the county’s history.

II. Settlement and Early History

  • Early Inhabitants: The area was the homeland of the Karankawa, a coastal people who were skilled fishers and hunters, perfectly adapted to the bay and barrier island environment.
  • Anglo-American Settlement: While the Spanish charted the coast, permanent settlement began in the 1830s and 1840s as part of the Power and Hewetson empresario grant. Early coastal communities like Lamar and Aransas City were founded, seeking to capitalize on the natural deepwater port at Aransas Pass.
  • Key Historical Events:
    • The Civil War: As a key Texas port, the area was a target of the Union naval blockade. Aransas Pass was used by Confederate blockade runners to export cotton and import supplies. Federal forces frequently raided the coast, destroying local salt works and shelling the town of Lamar, which was largely abandoned and never recovered its prominence.
    • Cattle and Meatpacking: In the decade following the Civil War, Aransas County boomed as a major hub for the cattle industry. Rockport and Fulton became critical deepwater ports for shipping cattle, hides, and tallow to markets in New Orleans and Cuba. The Morgan Line and the Fulton meatpacking plant were pioneering ventures in mechanized packing and shipping.
    • Maritime Economy: Beyond the cattle boom, the county’s economy has always been tied to the Gulf. Shipbuilding, commercial fishing, and shrimping became mainstays of the local economy from the late 19th century onward.
    • Hurricanes: The county’s history is marked by the devastating impact of major hurricanes, including the storms of 1916, 1919, Hurricane Carla (1961), and Hurricane Harvey (2017), each of which profoundly reshaped the community and its landscape.
