Davidson County, North Carolina: A Genealogical Overview

Located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina, Davidson County is a place where deep-rooted German traditions meet a proud industrial heritage. Settled heavily by German immigrants who traveled down the Great Wagon Road, the county’s culture is rich with their influence, from historic Lutheran and Reformed church records to enduring family names. Later known as a national hub for furniture manufacturing and for its world-famous Lexington-style barbecue, Davidson County offers genealogists a well-documented history of its transformation from a colonial frontier to a center of industry and craftsmanship.

I. County Formation and Evolution

Davidson County was created in the early 19th century from a single, large parent county, making the line for earlier research clear.

  • 1822: County Formed: Davidson County was officially established on December 9, 1822.
  • Parent County: It was formed entirely from the eastern section of Rowan County. All genealogical and land research for ancestors living in the area prior to the end of 1822 must be conducted using the records of Rowan County.
  • Subsequent Formations: The county’s boundaries have remained largely stable, though a portion of its territory was contributed to the formation of Davie County in 1836.
  • Name Origin: The county was named in honor of Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a distinguished North Carolina hero of the American Revolution who was killed at the Battle of Cowan’s Ford in 1781.
  • County Seat History: The city of Lexington was established as the county seat upon the county’s formation. In the late 19th century, a fierce political rivalry, often called the “Courthouse War,” erupted between Lexington and the rapidly industrializing city of Thomasville over the location of the county seat. After years of debate and multiple votes, Lexington ultimately retained the title and has remained the county seat ever since.

II. Settlement and Early History

  • Early Inhabitants: The area was a hunting and trading ground for Siouan-speaking peoples, primarily the Saponi. The “Great Trading Path” of the colonial era passed directly through the region.
  • Colonial Settlement: Beginning in the 1750s, the area (then part of Rowan County) received a large influx of German Lutheran and German Reformed settlers migrating from Pennsylvania. They were joined by smaller numbers of Scots-Irish and English settlers. This heavy German settlement is the single most defining characteristic of the county’s early history and culture.
  • Key Historical Events:
    • Silver and Gold Rush: In 1838, the Silver Hill Mine was established, becoming one of the most important silver, lead, and zinc mines in the state. This brought skilled miners and engineers to the area, diversifying the local economy.
    • Furniture Manufacturing: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city of Thomasville grew into a major center of American furniture production. Companies like Thomasville Furniture Industries employed thousands of residents and shaped the county’s economic identity for more than a century.
    • Lexington Barbecue: The development of a unique, vinegar-based pork shoulder barbecue has made Lexington a nationally recognized food destination and is a key element of the county’s cultural identity.

III. Genealogical Records and Resources

Records for Davidson County are well-maintained and centrally located in Lexington.

  • County Courthouse: The Davidson County Governmental Center, 913 Greensboro Street, Lexington, NC 27292, is the primary repository for historical records.
    • Register of Deeds: This office holds land records (deeds, plats) from 1823, marriage records, and the county’s official birth and death records.
    • Clerk of Superior Court: This office is the repository for all probate records (wills, estate files) and court records (civil and criminal), dating from 1823.
