DeKalb County, Missouri: A Genealogical Overview

Located in the northwestern portion of the state, DeKalb County is a rural, agricultural county with a history deeply rooted in the westward expansion of the United States. It was formed from land acquired in the 1836 Platte Purchase, which opened up the fertile prairies of northwest Missouri to a wave of settlement, primarily by pioneers from the Upland South. I. County Formation and Evolution

  • 1845: County Formed: DeKalb County was officially organized on February 25, 1845.
  • Parent County: It was created entirely from the northern portion of Clinton County. Therefore, any records of individuals who settled in the area prior to February 1845 would be located in the records of Clinton County, Missouri. The land itself was part of the Platte Purchase of 1836, territory acquired from the Sac, Fox, and Ioway tribes.
  • Subsequent Formations: The county’s boundaries have remained largely stable since a minor clarification of its western border in 1847. No new counties have been formed from its territory.
  • Name Origin: The county was named in honor of Baron Johann de Kalb, a Bavarian-French military officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and was killed in the Battle of Camden.
  • County Seat History: The first and current county seat is Maysville, which was platted in 1845. A contentious political battle in 1851 led to the temporary removal of the county seat to Stewartsville, but after intense local opposition, the records and government functions were returned to Maysville by 1852, where they have remained ever since.

  • Early Inhabitants: Prior to the 1830s, the land was the territory of the Ioway, Sac (Sauk), and Fox Native American tribes. The 1836 Platte Purchase treaty extinguished their land claims and opened the area for official American settlement.
