Johnson County, Iowa: A Genealogical Overview
Located in eastern Iowa, Johnson County is a vibrant hub of education, culture, and medicine, anchored by Iowa City and the University of Iowa. The county presents a landscape that transitions from the bustling academic and urban centers of Iowa City and Coralville to the rich, rolling farmland characteristic of the Midwest. Its history is deeply intertwined with the early territorial days of Iowa, serving as the cradle of the state’s government and its flagship university.
I. County Formation and Evolution
Understanding Johnson County’s formation from a vast parent county and its role as the early capital of Iowa is critical for locating the correct records for ancestors in the region.
- 1837: County Formed: Johnson County was established on December 21, 1837, by an act of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature. It was formally organized in 1838.
- Parent County: It was created from Dubuque County, which was one of the two original counties in the Iowa District of the Wisconsin Territory. Records prior to 1837 for this area would be located in Dubuque County, Wisconsin Territory records.
- Subsequent County Formations: The original boundaries of Johnson County were altered during the early territorial period as new counties were formed around it. Researchers with very early ancestors should consult historical maps of the Iowa Territory to confirm boundary lines during specific years.
- Name Origin: The county is named for Richard Mentor Johnson, the ninth Vice President of the United States, who was serving under President Martin Van Buren at the time of the county’s creation.
- County Seat History: The first county seat was the short-lived town of Napoleon. In 1839, the seat was moved to Iowa City after it was chosen to be the new capital of the Iowa Territory. Iowa City served as the territorial and then state capital until 1857, when the capital was moved to Des Moines. The Old Capitol building remains a central landmark on the University of Iowa campus.
II. Settlement and Early History
- Early Inhabitants: Prior to European-American settlement, the area was the traditional territory of the Sauk (Sac) and Meskwaki (Fox) peoples. The land was opened to settlement following the Black Hawk Purchase of 1832, which ceded large tracts of land in eastern Iowa to the United States.
- Pioneer Settlement and Economy: The first significant non-native settlement began in the mid-1830s, with pioneers arriving primarily from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Indiana. The designation of Iowa City as the territorial capital in 1839 spurred rapid growth. The economy was, and to a large extent remains, based on agriculture (corn, soybeans, hogs). However, the founding of the University of Iowa in 1847 shaped the county’s destiny, making education and, later, healthcare through the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, its dominant economic and cultural forces.
