Palm Beach County, Florida: A Genealogical Overview

Located on Florida’s southeastern coast, Palm Beach County is a region of immense wealth, sprawling agricultural land, and vibrant cultural diversity. Famously established as a Gilded Age winter playground for America’s elite, its history is inextricably linked to developer Henry M. Flagler, the Florida East Coast Railway, and the 20th-century real estate booms that transformed Florida. It stretches from the opulent coastal communities of Palm Beach and Boca Raton to the vast sugarcane fields of the Everglades Agricultural Area near Lake Okeechobee.

I. County Formation and Evolution

Understanding Palm Beach County’s formation from a larger parent county and its own role as a “mother county” is critical for locating the correct records for ancestors in this dynamic region.

  • 1909: County Formed: Palm Beach County was established on April 30, 1909, by an act of the Florida Legislature.
  • Parent County: It was created from the northern portion of what was then Dade County (now Miami-Dade County). Records for this area prior to April 1909 would be located in Dade County records.
  • Subsequent County Formations: Palm Beach County was later partitioned multiple times.
    • In 1915, its southern portion was combined with a piece of Dade County to create Broward County.
    • In 1917, its western area was used, along with parts of Osceola and St. Lucie counties, to form Okeechobee County.
    • In 1925, its northern part was split off to help create Martin County.Researchers with ancestors in these areas must be aware of these significant boundary changes.
  • Name Origin: The county is named for the community of Palm Beach, its first major resort settlement. The name originated from the 1878 shipwreck of the Spanish brigantine Providencia, which was carrying a cargo of coconuts. Settlers salvaged and planted the coconuts, creating the grove of palm trees that gave the island its name.
  • County Seat History: The county seat was established in West Palm Beach in 1909 and has remained there ever since.

II. Settlement and Early History

  • Early Inhabitants: The region was originally the territory of the Jaega and Tequesta peoples. These indigenous groups were coastal hunter-gatherers whose populations were decimated by European diseases and conflict; they had largely vanished by the mid-1700s.
  • Pioneer Settlement and Economy: The area remained sparsely populated until the arrival of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway in 1894. Flagler built the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers Hotel, establishing Palm Beach as a premier winter resort for the wealthy. This sparked the first major land boom. The economy was built on tourism, service industries, and real estate, while inland, the draining of the Everglades gave rise to a massive agricultural economy based primarily on sugarcane, winter vegetables, and sod.
