Phillips County, Colorado: A Genealogical Overview

Located on the high plains of northeastern Colorado, Phillips County is a land defined by agriculture, railroad development, and the homesteading spirit. Its history is tied to the transformation of the prairie into productive farmland, and its genealogical records reflect the stories of pioneers who settled the area in the late 19th century.

I. County Formation and Evolution

Understanding Phillips County’s creation from Logan County is the first step for any researcher, as earlier records must be sought elsewhere.

  • 1889: County Formed: Phillips County was officially established on April 9, 1889.
  • Parent County: It was created entirely from the eastern portion of Logan County. Because Logan County was itself formed from Weld County in 1887, research for ancestors in the area prior to 1887 must be conducted in Weld County records.
  • Name Origin: The county was named for R. O. Phillips, a secretary for the Lincoln Land Company, which was instrumental in promoting settlement along the new railroad line.
  • County Seat History: Holyoke was designated as the temporary county seat upon the county’s formation. In an election later in 1889, Holyoke was chosen as the permanent seat and has remained so ever since.

II. Settlement and Early History

  • Early Inhabitants: The vast plains of the region were the traditional hunting grounds of the Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples, with occasional use by the Pawnee and Sioux.
  • Railroad and Settlement: The area remained sparsely populated by non-native settlers until the arrival of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad in 1887. The railroad, along with land companies, actively recruited settlers from the eastern United States and Europe to purchase and farm the land.
  • Homesteading and Economy: The Homestead Act brought many families to the region to establish farms. The economy has always been overwhelmingly agricultural, based on dryland farming of crops like wheat and corn, as well as cattle ranching. The Dust Bowl of the 1930s was a significant event that tested the resilience of the county’s farmers and led to changes in agricultural practices.
