Alaska Borough & Census Area Histories

Browse Alaska Borough & Census Area Histories

Alaska is unique among U.S. states in that it does not have counties. Its county-equivalents are called “organized boroughs”. The vast remainder of the state that is not in any organized borough is termed the “Unorganized Borough”, which for statistical purposes is divided into “census areas”. Therefore, instead of “county”, the correct designators “borough” and “census area” are used below.

Organized Boroughs (County-Equivalents)

These are Alaska’s county-level governments with home rule or general powers similar to counties elsewhere in the U.S.

Unorganized Borough & Census Areas

Regions outside any organized borough; for statistical purposes, they’re grouped as census areas.

Historical Judicial Divisions (Pre-Statehood)

Territorial-era judicial districts used before Alaska became a state; useful for historical and archival research.
