Abbott, Frank Edgar
Frank Edgar Abbott, born in Sanger, Fresno County, California, on September 21, 1890, achieved a position of influence and trust through his own lifelong exertions. Reared in Los Angeles and educated in the public schools, he began contributing to his family’s support at the young age of nine. His early professional years were marked by diverse labor, including ranch work, driving large mule teams in Southern California and Yuba County, mining near Mojave, and learning collar-making at the Los Angeles Saddle and Finding Company. In 1909, he entered the oil industry with the Standard Oil Company in Coalinga, eventually advancing from the gas engine department to a driller and later becoming the foreman of the Continental on Section 2. Through diligent study and research, he successfully managed the production of twenty-one wells and supervised the drilling of new locations.
Beyond his industrial career, Abbott maintained deep community roots and notable family connections within the state of California. His maternal grandparents, Jesse Reed Edgar and Elizabeth Ragsdale, migrated across the plains by ox teams in 1859 to locate in Fresno County, where they owned acreage that eventually became part of the city of Sanger. His mother, Mattie Edgar, who moved to Coalinga in 1910 to preside over his home, held rich historical memories of the early pioneer days in Centerville and Sanger. Abbott achieved local distinction around 1913 when he installed a highly praised miniature oil farm exhibit for his employer at the Fresno Fair. Furthermore, his community involvement extended to his membership in the Coalinga Lodge No. 387, F. and A. M., and his service as a trustee for the Max Station school district.
