Marshall County, Iowa: A Genealogical Overview

Located in the heart of central Iowa, Marshall County is a quintessential piece of the American Corn Belt, defined by its rich agricultural land and the Iowa River valley. Its history is a classic story of Midwestern development, shaped by the displacement of Native peoples, the arrival of pioneering settlers, the transformative power of the railroad, and the growth of industry alongside farming. Its county seat and largest city, Marshalltown, serves as the region’s commercial hub.

I. County Formation and Evolution

Understanding Marshall County’s formation from territorial land and the history of its county seat is essential for locating the correct early records for ancestors in the region.

  • 1846: County Formed: Marshall County was established on January 13, 1846, by the legislature of the Territory of Iowa. The county government was formally organized in 1849.
  • Parent County: It was created from a large area of unorganized territory. Prior to its own organization, the land was attached to Jasper County for administrative and judicial purposes. Therefore, some of the very earliest official records (1846-1849) for settlers may be located in Jasper County records.
  • Subsequent County Formations: The boundaries of Marshall County were defined at its creation and have remained largely stable. It has not served as a “mother county” for the formation of other counties.
  • Name Origin: The county is named in honor of John Marshall, the influential fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
  • County Seat History: The first designated county seat was Marietta in 1851. A heated rivalry developed with the growing town of Marshall (now Marshalltown), which was better positioned on the railroad line. After a contentious vote, the county seat was officially moved to Marshalltown in 1860, where it has remained ever since.

II. Settlement and Early History

  • Early Inhabitants: The region was the traditional territory of the Meskwaki (Fox) people. Following treaties and removals in the 1840s, the land was opened to American settlement. Uniquely, a group of Meskwaki later returned to Iowa and purchased land in neighboring Tama County, where their descendants live today in the Meskwaki Settlement.
  • Pioneer Settlement and Economy: The first significant American settlement began in the late 1840s. The economy was almost entirely based on subsistence agriculture. The arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railway in the 1860s transformed Marshalltown into a major rail and commercial center. This spurred industrial growth, with companies like Lennox Industries being founded there. The economy today remains a strong mix of agriculture (corn and soybeans) and manufacturing.
