Hamilton County, Iowa: A Genealogical Overview
Located in the heart of central Iowa, Hamilton County is a rich agricultural region defined by its fertile farmland, the Boone River Valley, and a strong Midwestern heritage. Its history is a classic story of prairie settlement, the arrival of the railroad, and the development of a farm-based economy that continues to this day. The county is characterized by its small, close-knit communities and a significant Scandinavian-American cultural influence.
I. County Formation and Evolution
Understanding Hamilton County’s formation and its relationship to its parent county is the first step in locating the correct records for ancestors who settled on this part of the prairie.
- 1856: County Formed: The county was officially established and named Hamilton County on December 22, 1856.
- Parent County: It was created from the western portion of Webster County, which at the time covered a much larger, unorganized territory. Records prior to late 1856 for this area would be located in Webster County records. The area was briefly organized as Risley County in 1853 before being officially renamed.
- Subsequent County Formations: The boundaries of Hamilton County have remained largely unchanged since its formation in 1856.
- Name Origin: The county was named in honor of Wesley Hamilton, the President of the Iowa State Senate at the time of the county’s creation.
- County Seat History: The first county seat was the now-extinct town of Homer. Following a contentious election in 1857, the county seat was officially moved to its present location in Webster City.
II. Settlement and Early History
- Early Inhabitants: Before European settlement, the region was the territory of the Sauk (Sac) and Meskwaki (Fox) peoples. The Sioux (Dakota) also used the area as hunting grounds.
- Pioneer Settlement and Economy: The first significant non-native settlement began in the early 1850s, with pioneers arriving from Ohio, Indiana, and New York. A major wave of immigration from Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden and Norway, occurred after the Civil War, shaping the county’s cultural identity. The economy has always been centered on agriculture, with corn and soybeans as primary crops and a significant history of livestock production. The arrival of the railroad was a critical catalyst for growth, connecting local farmers to national markets.
