Zwang, Jacob
Jacob Zwang, born in Baden, Germany, in 1879, was a prominent pioneer businessman who contributed significantly to the commercial growth of Fresno County. Emigrating to the United States at the age of sixteen, he completed his education in Visalia, Tulare County, where he learned the butcher’s trade under M. Levy. He entered business with Levy in Laton to establish the town’s first butcher shop before relocating to Coalinga in 1905. The following year, they incorporated the Crescent Meat Company, with Zwang serving as vice president and general manager.
Under his direction, the Crescent Meat Company expanded its wholesale and retail operations by building a modern slaughterhouse, a cold-storage plant, and managing extensive mountain pasturage for livestock. Beyond his local meat enterprise, Zwang served as secretary for the Hays Cattle Company in Arizona, invested in oil development, and became a director of the First National Bank of Coalinga. Married to Maude Wagner of Parkfield, Monterey County, in San Francisco, he raised two sons, Darrell and Herman. He was also an active leader in the local Odd Fellows, Eagles, and the Coalinga Chamber of Commerce.
