Yerington, William
William Yerington was born near Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, on March 21, 1870, to parents Mordecai Yerington and Hannah Lovett. Raised on a farm in Putnam County, Missouri, he ventured west in 1890 to work on a horse ranch near Boise City, Idaho. He eventually moved to California in 1893, working on ranches in Hayward, San Jose, and Volta before serving as foreman at the Dos Palos ranch at Oxalis.
In the spring of 1907, William relocated to Mendota, Fresno County, where he purchased the Mendota Hotel two years later. Operating the popular establishment alongside partner Peter Hansen, the pair expanded their enterprise by building the first concrete fire-proof garage in town. Married in San Jose to Julia Haney, he also owned a seventy-acre alfalfa ranch in Stratford, Kings County, and served as Past Chancellor Commander in the local Knights of Pythias lodge.
