Woodworth, Joseph E.
Joseph E. Woodworth, born near Sacramento, California, on October 24, 1857, was a successful pioneer rancher and the son of Alonzo Woodworth and Julia Malissa Twitchell. Raised in San Juan, where he attended public school and worked as a farmer and teamster, he moved to the San Joaquin Valley in 1883. After farming near Newman and raising Durham cattle on 320 acres in Stanislaus County, he relocated to Dos Palos in 1896 and later settled in Laguna, six miles southwest of Laton, in 1901. He established a well-improved 70-acre ranch focused on fine corn, alfalfa hay, and high-grade hogs.
Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Joseph was an active contributor to local business and community development, helping to organize the Laton Creamery and support the Hardwick Bank. In his personal life, he married his first wife, Mary F. Shook, in San Juan, with whom he had two daughters, Josie May and Pearl, before marrying his second wife, Ola Allen, in 1902. A Republican in national politics and an affiliate of the Native Sons of the Golden West in San Jose, he was well known for his skills as a horseman and livestock handler. His long career in farming and community building reflects the prominent role of early California pioneer families in developing the state’s central agricultural regions.
