Wolter, Rev. Carl W.
Rev. Carl W. Wolter, born in Belgard, Pomerania, Germany, on August 9, 1876, was a distinguished clergyman who served as pastor of the Free Evangelical Lutheran Cross Church of Fresno. He was the son of Carl W. Wolter, a paymaster in the German Army, and Wilhelmina Katherine Wolter, who brought her family to Dayton, Ohio, in 1892 following her husband’s death. After graduating from the gymnasium in Belgard and completing a theological course at the United Brethren Seminary in Dayton in 1897, Wolter was ordained in 1900 and served congregations in Cincinnati, Peoria, and Parkston, South Dakota. He married Annie Moeller in 1897, with whom he had two children, Marie and William, before her passing in Peoria; he later married Amalia Seitz in Cleveland in 1908, with whom he had three children, Carl, Howard, and John.
Moving to Fresno on May 1, 1913, Reverend Wolter oversaw significant expansion at the Free Evangelical Lutheran Cross Church, doubling its membership to over one thousand. Under his leadership, the congregation built a large brick edifice at F and San Diego Streets in 1915, featuring a 1,600-seat auditorium and a 3,000-dollar pipe organ, as well as a modern parsonage completed in 1913. Beyond his local pastoral duties, he earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from American University in Chicago in 1914, served as a trustee of the Northern California Conference of the Congregational Church, and edited the Brothers Paper. His dedicated service and community leadership left a lasting mark on the religious and civic life of Fresno County.
