Winchell, Hon. Elisha C.
Elisha Cotton Winchell was born in West Springfield, Massachusetts, on July 25, 1826, to parents Elias Winchell and Fanny Ely. After relocating westward through Quincy, Illinois, and Missouri, he studied law in Palmyra under Thomas L. Anderson and John W. Dryden before gaining admission to the bar in June 1848. Following an arduous overland journey along the Humboldt and Carson rivers, he arrived in Sacramento, California, in August 1850, where he opened a law practice and married Laura C. Alsip on July 7, 1853, going on to raise four children named Lilbourne, Iva, Ledyard, and Anna.
In May 1859, Elisha moved his family to Millerton to reside at Fort Miller and Winchell Gulch while serving as Fresno County’s first school superintendent, district attorney, and county judge. He later opened the first law office in the new county seat of Fresno, constructed business property along Mariposa and J streets, and developed local infrastructure, including the Fresno, Belmont and Yosemite Railroad and a major Kings River irrigation canal. Following financial reverses in the 1890s, he retired to San Francisco with his wife, later moving to Berkeley after her death in 1908, where he remained until his passing on July 24, 1913, before being interred in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.
