Winchell, Anna Cora
Anna Cora Winchell was born on June 24, 1870, in Solano County, California, to Judge E. C. Winchell and Laura C. Winchell. Raised near Fort Miller and in Fresno, she finished her education at Field Seminary in Oakland in 1889. From a young age, she displayed an exceptional talent for music, training under leading Bay Area teachers on the piano and completing a pipe organ course.
Building on her musical expertise and literary skills, Anna embarked on a successful journalism career in San Francisco. She served as music and drama critic for the San Francisco Dramatic Review in 1902 and later joined the San Francisco Call in 1904. After surviving the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, she joined the staff of the San Francisco Chronicle, eventually becoming its art and music editor.
