Wilson, J. D.
J. D. Wilson was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1892, as the son of J. A. Wilson and Mary T. Wilson. Raised in Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin, he pursued higher education at the Lewis Institute and the University of Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture. He first visited Fresno County in 1906 and returned permanently in 1913 to manage his family’s agricultural holdings under the Enterprise Canal north of Clovis.
In 1917, he incorporated the Wilson Vineyard Company alongside his father, serving as the enterprise’s secretary, treasurer, and manager. His 320-acre property featured diverse plantings of Malaga, Emperor, and wine grapes, alongside a peach orchard producing Muir, Lovell, and Elberta varieties. Married to Fresno County native Bettie Beveridge, with whom he had a son named James Beveridge, he remained an active Republican, a dedicated civic supporter, and a key member of the California Associated Raisin Company and California Peach Growers.
