Williams, Harold Clyde
Harold Clyde Williams was born in Mitchell, Ontario, Canada, on December 11, 1884, to parents John E. Williams and Elizabeth Tilley. After completing his education at age sixteen, he immigrated to the United States and learned telegraphy while working for the Lehigh Valley Railway Company in New York. He relocated to California in January 1902 to work as a ticket and relief agent for the Southern Pacific Railway, eventually arriving in Coalinga in 1905.
In October 1906, Harold resigned from the railway to launch a successful commercial career in Coalinga, beginning with a cigar store on Front Street before expanding to Fifth Street. He developed a popular business featuring a confectionery, modern soda fountain, billiard parlor, wholesale and retail tobacco enterprise, and a cafe. Beyond his retail ventures, he served as a Coalinga city trustee, managed local billboard posting, helped organize the Coalinga-Merced Acres Syndicate, and married Julia Blanche Levy in Laton.
