Williams, Charles Elliott
Charles Elliott Williams was born at Crestline, Richland County, Ohio, on October 23, 1854, to parents Benjamin Williams and Catherine Tyler. Raised and educated in Crawford County, Illinois, after his family moved there in 1863, he purchased a farm near Flat Rock at age twenty-one. On October 13, 1887, he married Emma E. Fry at Allison Prairie in Lawrence County, Illinois, where he eventually established himself as an extensive farmer operating over seven hundred acres.
On January 12, 1912, Charles relocated with his family to California and briefly ran a mercantile business in Fresno. He sold the enterprise later that year to acquire a twenty-acre tract eleven miles east of town on Ventura Avenue in the Grandville district. There, he developed a fruitful vineyard of Thompson seedless raisin grapes alongside a family orchard while actively supporting local public schools and institutions as a loyal Fresno County resident.
