Wahl, Mrs. Louis
Mrs. Louis Wahl was born Marie Baudendistel in Mesbach, Baden, Germany, as the daughter of baker Anton Baudendistel and Marie Glauser. After completing her education in Baden, she immigrated to the United States in 1871 to join her sister in San Francisco, California. In 1875, she married Louis Wahl, a native of Württemberg and a former regular army soldier who had served in Alaska. The couple purchased twenty acres of unimproved land about four miles east of Fresno in 1880, moving to the property in 1885 to establish their home.
Upon settling on the land, Mrs. Wahl and her husband leveled the property, planted vines, and built a residence with necessary outbuildings to create the productive Park Vineyard. Following Louis Wahl death in 1896 at fifty-five years of age, she assumed full operation of the ranch and joined the California Association of Raisin Company. As one of the oldest early settlers in the immediate vicinity of Fresno, she maintained a strong faith in the growth of the region while successfully running her agricultural enterprise. Her enduring efforts as an early viticulturist established her as a loyal, respected, and influential figure in the development of Fresno County.
