Vogel, Jacob
Jacob Vogel, born in Hesse-Cassel, Germany, on November 27, 1830, was a Union Army veteran, merchant, and prominent financial leader in Fresno County, California. He learned the shoemaking trade in Germany before immigrating to America in 1857, where he served in Company A of the Ninety-Fourth Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. After running a successful business in Clinton, Illinois, he moved to California in 1886 following a visit as a Grand Army delegate. He settled in Fresno, where he invested heavily in local real estate, built an alfalfa ranch, and served as vice-president and director of the First National Bank of Fresno alongside numerous other banking and corporate ventures. He married Eliza Ludolph, with whom he had six children, and passed away in Fruitvale on February 11, 1915.
His son, Herbert E. Vogel, born in DeWitt County, Illinois, on May 16, 1877, expanded the family legacy as a pioneering rancher and civic leader in Fresno County. After graduating from Fresno High School in 1895, he developed a 400-acre model dairy ranch ten miles west of Fresno and became one of the oldest, most celebrated breeders of registered Holstein cattle in California. He served as a director of the Fresno District Fair Association for ten years and assumed the presidency of the Fresno Hardware Company in 1910. Married to Fresno native Irma E. Foley, with whom he had a daughter named Verna V., he maintained an active presence in local affairs as a Mason and Shriner. Together, father and son made enduring contributions to the economic and agricultural history of the San Joaquin Valley.
