Verwoert, Mrs. Alfreda
Mrs. Alfreda Verwoert was born in Melvern, Osage County, Kansas, as the youngest child of John A. Douglass and Amelia Mitchell. She moved with her family to Hanford, California, around 1890, where she attended local schools before studying at the College of Natural Sciences at the University of California. In 1900, she married Carel H. M. Verwoert in Hanford, a native of Holland who developed lands in the Queen Wilhelmina Colony in Kings County until his death in 1907, leaving her with their son, Herman.
Following her husband passing, Mrs. Verwoert successfully managed his extensive agricultural holdings before moving to San Francisco to direct the Pacific Coast department of the Redpath Lyceum Bureau. Recognizing the immense potential of regional real estate, she returned to agricultural investment and acquired roughly 900 acres across six ranches in Fresno County alongside a 350-acre vineyard near Hanford. She eventually sold her Fresno County ranches at a large profit while retaining a sixty-acre peach orchard near Sanger, maintaining active memberships in both the California Peach Growers, Inc. and the California Associated Raisin Company.
