Vanderburgh, John Jay
John Jay Vanderburgh was born on April 13, 1866, in Waterloo, Blackhawk County, Iowa, to Isaac K. Vanderburgh and Pluma A. Gaines. He accompanied his parents to California in 1875, eventually furthering his education at the academy in Tulare before working for four years as a local school instructor. In 1891, he joined the publishing company of the Selma Irrigator, where he eventually purchased full ownership of the newspaper by 1897 and served as its editor and publisher.
Alongside his wife, Isabelle Bowen, whom he married on September 11, 1889, John Jay Vanderburgh managed the paper while actively participating in local governance and fraternal organizations. Mrs. Vanderburgh, a former teacher from Missouri whose family held historic American lineage, assisted her husband in editorial and office duties while raising their daughters, Zoe and Isabelle. Beyond his journalism career, Mr. Vanderburgh served as a member of the Selma city board of trustees, held high offices in the local Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges, and supported major agricultural and civic bodies across Fresno County.
