Uhler, Russell
Russell Uhler was born in San Francisco, California, on June 1, 1875, to parents J. Clement Uhler and Emma Conkling. Educated at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, he spent eight years engaged in stock-raising in Wyoming. While in Wyoming, he entered public life by serving in the Seventh and Eighth state legislatures during the sessions that opened in 1902 and 1904.
Disposing of his cattle interests in 1907, Russell moved to Fresno, California, where he operated a wholesale grain and seed business for a year and a half. Married to Emily Robinson on January 8, 1903, he became the father of two children, Harry and Maurice. He served as chairman of the Democratic Central Committee starting in 1912, worked two years as clerk of the court, and earned historical distinction as the first county purchasing agent of Fresno County.
