Uhd, Hans A.
Hans A. Uhd was born at Varda in Jylland, Denmark, on November 25, 1863, to parents Anton Uhd and Johanna Knudsen. Raised on a farm, he assisted his mother with the family land after his father passed away and completed his required Danish Army service as a staff messenger. In 1890, he immigrated to California and settled in Fresno County, where he worked on various local ranches, including Washington Colony, Sackett Vineyard, and Kearney Park.
In the spring of 1891, Hans married Mary Jacobsen, a native of Esbjerg, Jylland, Denmark, and began renting land near Rolinda for dairying and poultry raising. By 1898, he purchased twenty acres of stubble field, which he leveled and sowed to alfalfa, later expanding his property into a fully improved forty-acre dairy farm. Together with his wife, he raised three children—Clara, Agnes, and Axel—while actively contributing to his community as a member of the Danish Brotherhood and a stockholder in the Danish Creamery Association.
