Tupper, Henry Clay
Henry Clay Tupper was born in Canton, Mississippi, on December 29, 1842, to prominent lawyer Tullius C. Tupper and Mary Harding Drane. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton College in 1861 and later earned his Master of Arts degree from the same institution. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a lieutenant in the Twenty-fourth Mississippi Regiment, serving as an aide-de-camp and inspector-general before surrendering with General Johnston in 1865. After returning to civilian life, he was admitted to practice law in Mississippi around 1872 before moving west and earning his admission to the California bar in July 1877.
Upon establishing his legal practice in Fresno, California, Henry Clay Tupper became a distinguished attorney for major corporations, including the Fresno Canal and Irrigation Company. On December 25, 1878, he married Elizabeth Johnson in San Francisco, and together they raised a large family that included children James Tullius, Roland Beatty, William Charles, Anna Elizabeth, Mary Helen, Donald Lewis, and Sidney Johnston, alongside two sons, Hampton and Henry Walter, who passed away. Active in local civic affairs under the Democratic banner, he served as a safe guide for public welfare and legal matters throughout the region. His extensive military service, legal leadership, and prominent family connections established his lasting historical significance within Fresno County.
