Swift, Harvey W.
Harvey W. Swift was born in Penfield, New York, on May 21, 1853, to parents who later relocated to Hillsdale, Michigan. He entered the lumber industry as a young man, erecting a shingle mill in Edmore, Michigan, and running a business in Cheboygan alongside his brother, Lewis P. Swift. After moving to California, he became an original organizer of the Fresno Flume and Irrigation Company, eventually serving as its president and general manager alongside partner C. B. Shaver.
In Fresno County, Harvey diversified his business interests into the local oil industry, navigation, and agricultural land development near Centerville and the Bullard tract. Married in Blanchard, Michigan, in 1884 to Minnie K. Roberts, he became a prominent civic leader who supported the Fresno County Fair Association, local good roads movements, and charitable organizations like the Y. M. C. A. Following a brief illness, he passed away on April 11, 1915, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a public-spirited advocate for the growth of Fresno.
