Sward, Axel W.
Axel W. Sward was born near Stockholm, Sweden, on July 29, 1864, to Captain Peter August Sward and his wife, both of whom passed away during his early childhood. Left an orphan at age five, he grew up working hard in a private family before immigrating alone to America in 1877 at thirteen years old. After arriving in New York City, he traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he eventually operated his own grocery business. He later engaged in various trades as a blacksmith, carpenter, and contractor across Kansas City, Missouri, and Omaha and Phelps County, Nebraska, where he married Almeda Dahlstrom, daughter of pioneer farmers John Dahlstrom and Mary Dahlstedt.
In 1906, Axel relocated to Kingsburg, Fresno County, California, where he established himself as a prominent merchant, landowner, and director of the Kingsburg Bank. He co-owned the general merchandise firm Carlson and Sward, opened an exclusive boot and shoe store, and developed the town by plotting the East Park Addition to Kingsburg. Alongside his agricultural holdings sixteen miles west of Kingsburg, he and his wife raised three surviving children named Harold, Marian, and Ruby, while actively supporting the Swedish Free Mission Church. His life story reflects the remarkable success of an orphaned Swedish immigrant who contributed significantly to the commercial and civic development of Central California.
