Swanson, Nels
Nels Swanson was born near Laholm, Halan, Sweden, on December 7, 1872, to parents Swen and Ingri Paulson. After immigrating to America, he arrived in Fresno, California, on May 17, 1892, where he initially worked in an Oleander vineyard. In 1898, he ventured to the Klondike during the Alaska gold rush, traveling over Chilcoot Pass to Dawson before returning to Fresno County on October 4, 1900.
Upon his return, Nels purchased thirty acres at Johnson and Belmont Avenues before acquiring his permanent twenty-acre ranch on Madison Avenue west of Fresno in 1906. He married Ida Gustafson on February 18, 1903, in Fresno, and together they raised four children: Carlton Sherwood, Freda, Edith, and Nels, Jr. Dedicating his land to muscat and Thompson seedless grapes, he became an active supporter of the California Associated Raisin Company and a prominent Lutheran community member.
