Stranahan, John H.
John H. Stranahan was born at North Kortright, Delaware County, New York, on February 28, 1863, to William Stranahan and Fannie M. Schemerhorn. Reared near Albany before moving to Spring Creek, Warren County, Pennsylvania, he entered the oil industry as a young man and eventually became a foreman for the Standard Oil Company. In November 1909, he relocated to Coalinga, California, where he worked as a driller and later served as lease foreman for both the British Consolidated Oil Company and the Homestead Development Oil Company.
Throughout his career in Fresno County, John gained wide esteem for his management of oil wells on section 12-20-14 using modern electric motors. On July 2, 1884, he married Evelyn M. Miles in Corry, Pennsylvania, and the couple had one daughter, Frances, who graduated with honors from the University of California in 1918. Beyond his professional role, he was active in civic affairs, held memberships in the Masons, Odd Fellows, and Growlers Club, and supported the local Presbyterian Church alongside his family.
