Stockton, Guy

Guy Stockton, born in New Mexico on January 26, 1880, was a successful promoter and real estate builder who contributed significantly to the growth of Fresno, California. Following the early death of his father, his mother married attorney N. C. Caldwell, and the family relocated to Fresno in March 1887. He attended the local public schools through the seventh grade before leaving to earn his own living selling newspapers, working in planing mills, dairies, grocery stores, and fruit packing houses. His early financial turning point came in Kern County, where he leased an apiary on shares and earned five hundred dollars. Using that initial capital, he bought his first ten acres of land on Church Avenue alongside one hundred hives of bees, quickly establishing himself as a major honey producer and an early secretary of the local Beekeepers Association.

Entering the real estate business in 1907, Stockton launched a highly successful career by selling a forty-acre orange grove at Centerville for twenty-six thousand dollars. He became a pioneer in developing north-end property in Fresno, subdividing land, erecting numerous homes, and managing sales for tracts like Sunnyside Gardens, Baker Heights, and the Peerless Orchards Company. Through his ventures, he acquired extensive personal holdings, including an eighty-acre Calimyrna fig orchard near Clovis and additional acreage on the west side. In his personal life, he had two sons, Frank R. and Norman, from a former marriage, and later married Florence Brocklebank, a native of Freehold, New Jersey, who actively assisted him in his business enterprises. His life and energetic work established him as one of the real builders responsible for the rapid expansion of Fresno County.
