Souza, Ed. J.
Edward J. Souza, born in Marin County, California, on November 12, 1895, was an energetic young native son who built a successful career in ranching in Fresno County. He was the son of Henry Souza and Lucy Garcia Souza, both natives of the Azores who immigrated to the United States and settled in California in 1889. Before pursuing his current ranching operations, Edward engaged in various agricultural and commercial endeavors across the state alongside his family. He previously rented a large dairy ranch at Herndon with his brother Henry, entered the stock business in Tehama County, and spent three years in Sacramento assisting his brother George with his tow boat business.
In 1918, Edward rented the G. W. Beale eighty-acre ranch, located two and a half miles southwest of Monmouth, which he successfully operated with the assistance of his brother Joseph. The land was dedicated to raising peaches and vines, serving as a fruitful agricultural property for his family enterprise. Known for providing a home on the rented ranch for his parents, Edward maintained close family connections with his parents and six siblings, including brothers who served in the United States Army in France. Intelligent, industrious, generous, and public-spirited, his life exemplifies the dedication and resilience of early twentieth-century California ranchers in Fresno County.
