South, N. Lindsay
N. Lindsay South, born in Franklin County, Kentucky, on September 28, 1879, was a prominent attorney and member of the law firm South and Ross in Fresno, California. He descended from a distinguished Southern lineage; his father was the Reverend James Knox Polk South, a Confederate Army lieutenant and Christian minister, while his mother was Endora Lindsay, an educator and author. After receiving his early training at his mother’s school, he studied at Kentucky University, pursued literature and oratory at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and completed legal studies following a year of travel in Europe. Admitted to the Kentucky Bar in 1905, he practiced law in Frankfort and served as assistant to Attorney General Napoleon Bonaparte Hayes before moving to California in 1911.
Upon arriving in California, N. Lindsay South was welcomed to the state bar and built an ever-increasing clientele at his offices in the Forsyth Building in Fresno. He married Texas native Nell C. Clanton in San Francisco in October 1912, and together they had two children, Nell C. South and Jean Weldon South. Active in both his local community and his field, he maintained memberships in county and state bar associations as well as the Christian Church. Politically, he aligned as a Democrat in national matters while choosing to support the best-qualified candidates in local elections regardless of party affiliation. His career and active civic engagement marked him as a respected legal figure and community representative in Fresno County.
