Snyder, George H.
George H. Snyder, born in Flemington, New Jersey, on November 16, 1864, was the eldest child of Henry Snyder, a German carpenter turned farmer, and Mary Riley, a native of Ireland. At fourteen years old, he began his mechanical career as a machinist apprentice with the Long Island Railway Shops before advancing to roles with the Lehigh Valley Railway and the New Jersey Central Railway. Following the blizzard of 1888, he spent over sixteen years in Mexico working as a master mechanic for railway and coal companies, as well as managing an irrigation plant for Sabinas Limited. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1904 to oversee power plants and shops for the Interurban and Pacific Electric Railway and manage government construction on the Colorado River. In 1907, he joined the Tracy Engineering Company to install boilers along the Associated Pipe Line between Bakersfield and Port Costa.
After working as an inspector in Fresno, his exceptional service led to his 1911 appointment as superintendent of the Maricopa division for the Associated Pipe Line, overseeing 150 miles of line from Maricopa to Mendota with headquarters in Coalinga. In this leadership role, he contributed significantly to the advancement of the thriving California oil industry and the local business development of Fresno County. Beyond his professional responsibilities, he maintained strong community connections through membership in the Odd Fellows, the Knights of Pythias, and the Coalinga Growlers Club as an ex-director. He also actively supported civic growth and participated in local war movements to benefit the region. His life and varied career reflect the dedication of skilled engineers who helped build the critical industrial infrastructure of the state.
