Smith, Thomas D., M.D.
Dr. Thomas D. Smith, born in Hancock County, Ohio, on November 17, 1864, was a distinguished physician who contributed significantly to the medical and civic growth of Central California. He grew up on his father James P. Smith’s farm, attended local schools, spent a year at Wooster University, and later graduated from the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College in the Class of 92. He further advanced his professional training by taking a postgraduate course at the New York Post-Graduate College and serving on the medical staff of the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital. Following his graduation in June 1892, he married Dr. Flora Williams, a fellow Doctor of Medicine from the same college. His early career included practicing medicine in Yreka, Siskiyou County, working on the municipal medical staff in Cleveland, and running a general practice in Bremen, Indiana, until 1911.
After relocating to Fresno County, Dr. Smith established himself as a scholarly leader in his profession who provided dedicated general medical care to his community. In 1915, he collaborated with his wife to construct the Smith Block in Kingsburg, which stood as one of the best arranged office buildings in the San Joaquin Valley. This facility housed suites for both doctors, a dental office, a shared reception area, and well equipped operating rooms. Beyond his private practice, he actively supported local civic and agricultural interests as a shareholder in both the California Raisin Growers Association and the California Peach Growers Association. Prominent in Masonic circles alongside his wife, Dr. Smith was widely recognized for his strict integrity and commitment to improving public health conditions across Kingsburg and the surrounding area.
