Smith, James W.
James W. Smith, born at Kempt, Hants County, Nova Scotia, on November 23, 1844, was a pioneer contractor who helped build early Fresno, California. After learning the trade of a ship carpenter and working in Nova Scotia and Boston, he traveled to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1868. He worked on major building projects in San Francisco and spent seven years as a carpenter in Yuba County before settling in Fresno on August 3, 1880. Upon his arrival, he initially farmed twenty acres of land to grain, alfalfa, and vineyard before selling the property, which later became part of the Woodward Addition subdivision. In 1884, he built his own residence at 807 M Street during a time when the location was considered out in the country.
Continuing his career in Fresno, Mr. Smith engaged in planing mill construction, building and operating both the first and second Mechanics Planing Mills as well as the California Planing Mill. As a prominent contractor and builder, he constructed major landmarks including the Masonic Temple, Risley Block, First Presbyterian Church, First Methodist Church, Elm Street School, and the Presbyterian Church at Fowler. He also served as foreman during the construction of the Barton Opera House in Fresno. Married to Nova Scotia native Mary M. Murdock, he was the father of six children named Laura F., Lillian A., Herbert A., Ernest E., Viola, and James H. Through his structural contributions, family connections, and active membership in fraternal organizations like the Masons, Elks, and Odd Fellows, he left a lasting mark on the community.
