Sinclair, John G. C.
John G. C. Sinclair, born in Wick, Caithness-shire, Scotland, on April 8, 1864, was a highly respected farmer, vineyardist, and pioneer grain-buyer in Caruthers, Fresno County. Raised as the son of a successful commission man and auctioneer, he learned agriculture and stock-raising on local farms before sailing from Glasgow on his twenty-first birthday in 1885. He traveled through Boston, Quebec, Chicago, and Winnipeg, working on a wheat farm and in a Hudson Bay Company flour mill before arriving in California in 1887. In 1888, he moved to Fresno County to manage a new grain warehouse, where he also spent a year working directly for pioneer Billy Caruthers. He managed the local warehouse and bought grain for twenty-five years, while also acquiring part of the Caruthers ranch to raise dairy, alfalfa, peaches, and grapes.
In 1901, John returned to Scotland to marry Christina S. Henderson, with whom he had five children: Minnie H., Donald, John G. C., Jr., Margaret C., and Alexander H. His sons served in the military during World War I, and his daughter Margaret excelled as an honor student at the State University. Beyond his successful agricultural pursuits, John was a public-spirited leader who served as a trustee for the local Methodist Episcopal Church and actively supported local educational initiatives, including the construction of the Caruthers High School building in 1914. His family contributed to community organizations like the Red Cross and the Caruthers Cooperative Cheese Association while residing on their home ranch north of town. John G. C. Sinclair earned a lasting reputation as a square-dealer whose dedication helped shape the economic and civic foundation of Caruthers.
