Simpson, James William
James William Simpson, born in Coleman Valley, Sonoma County, California, on April 26, 1875, was a successful general contractor and the son of pioneers J. F. Simpson and Margaret M. Frazer. Raised in Fresno County from the age of seven, he attended local public schools under teachers H. Hadsell and A. M. Drew while learning farm work on his family land. As a young man, he helped his father cultivate large-scale grain crops and establish early experimental muscat vineyards on the Laguna De Tache Grant and the Little Sharon vineyard. At age fourteen, he began hauling wood into Fresno with an eight-mule team and remained working with his father until striking out on his own at twenty-three. His early life reflected the hard work and agrarian lifestyle typical of early California settlers developing the San Joaquin Valley.
After initially dry-farming in the Kerman district and on the site of Roeding Park, James Simpson expanded into land development contracting once irrigation arrived. Over a twenty-year career as a general contractor, he leveled land, built ditches, and improved thousands of acres across Fresno County, the San Joaquin Valley, and the San Francisco Bay region. His notable projects included grading railroad lines, establishing a dairy and vineyard on his own Jensen Avenue property, and partnering with J. F. Kennedy to develop a 1,000-acre tract in the Rolinda section. Married in Hanford to Ellen Trabucco, a graduate of Notre Dame College and daughter of pioneer stock, he was known alongside his wife for great energy and hospitality. A loyal Democrat who continued large-scale grain farming throughout his career, his extensive contracting work left a lasting mark on the economic and physical development of the region.
