Short, John W.
John W. Short, born in Shelby County, Missouri, on October 8, 1858, was an influential journalist, public official, and community builder in Fresno, California. After moving to the frontier town of Hastings, Nebraska, in 1869, he began learning the printing business at age fourteen with the Sarpy County Sentinel and later worked for the Papillion Times and Hastings Journal. He relocated to Fresno in 1881 to join his uncle, Hon. J. F. Wharton, and initially secured employment as a compositor on the Fresno Republican. Within a year, at twenty-four years of age, he became editor of the paper and eventually established the Daily Republican, the city’s first morning paper, with partner J. W. Shanklin. Under his leadership, the publication consistently advocated for law, order, and moral advancement during a period of rapid regional growth.
Beyond his editorial work, John W. Short assisted in organizing the Republican Publishing Company and built the Short Building on J Street alongside his brother, Hon. Frank H. Short. He served as Fresno’s Postmaster for fifteen years following appointments by Presidents McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft. Dedicated to public service, he contributed to local civic development as a member of the Fresno Board of Education, a library trustee, and a longtime director of the Chamber of Commerce. He married Jessie Francis of Calistoga, and together they raised two sons, James V. and John Douglas. His deep familiarity with local history and decades of civic engagement made him a prominent figure in the ongoing transformation of Fresno County.
