Short, Frank H.
Frank H. Short, born in Shelby County, Missouri, on September 12, 1862, was a leading attorney and prominent business figure in the San Joaquin Valley. The son of Hamilton Short, a Union soldier who died during the Civil War, and Emily Wharton Short, Frank moved to California in 1881 after working as a schoolteacher. Settling in Fresno, he studied law under his uncle, state legislator Frank Wharton, and gained admission to the California bar in 1887. Over his legal career, he earned a reputation as a brilliant practitioner, successfully representing mineral locators before the United States Supreme Court, procuring major freight rate reductions for oil shippers, and serving as an attorney for major water and electric power companies on the Pacific Coast.
Beyond his legal practice, Frank H. Short was an influential figure in financial circles and Republican political affairs across California. He served as a justice of the peace, held roles on public governing boards such as the State Board of Commissioners for the preservation of Yosemite Valley, and helped direct institutions like the Fresno National Bank and the Fresno Canal and Irrigation Company. In his personal life, he fathered a son, Frank H. Short, Jr., with his first wife, Emma Packard, and later married Nellie C. Curtis Rorick in 1897, becoming stepfather to her daughter, Mildred. Recognized as an active community leader and ex-president of both the Fresno County and California State Bar Associations, his extensive contributions helped shape the economic and legal development of Fresno County.
