Shipp, George R.
George R. Shipp, born in Holmes County, Mississippi, on October 29, 1865, was a successful sheepman and farmer who witnessed the growth and transformation of early Fresno County. He came to California in 1868 with his parents, William W. Shipp and Mary J. Strother, after his father selected a preemption on Dry Creek to raise livestock. Educated in local public and private schools, George began assisting with his father flocks at eight years of age and assumed full charge of them on the range by age fifteen. In 1887, he bought an interest in the livestock and took management of his family ranch on the San Joaquin River. Over time, he expanded his agricultural holdings across the county, leased range lands near Kerman, and successfully transitioned into the cattle business after sheep were excluded from the Forest Reserve.
In 1913, George sold his previous ranch holdings to relocate to Fresno, where he purchased a 160 acre ranch on Blackstone Avenue to plant peaches and figs. He married Abbie W. Webster in Los Angeles in 1891, and together they raised two children, Georgia and Harold W., who served as an army dispatch rider overseas. Active in local fraternal life, he became a member of Fresno Lodge No. 439, B. P. O. Elks, and built a personal residence on Clark Street. His father once offered 160 acres to the Santa Fe Railroad for a town site, connecting the family directly to early regional transit developments. His long career as an expert stockman and developer reflects the historical significance of early pioneers who shaped the agricultural economy of the San Joaquin Valley.
