Shaver, Charles B.
Charles B. Shaver, born in Steuben County, New York, in 1855, was a distinguished lumber industry executive who played an instrumental role in the economic growth of Fresno County, California. The son of John L. Shaver and Mary Rose, he moved to Michigan with his family at age nine, where he received his public school education. By age nineteen, he entered the lumber business and accumulated extensive experience managing logging operations, building railways, and constructing mills across Michigan and Missouri. In 1892, he brought his industry expertise west to Fresno, where he immediately assumed charge of the newly organized Fresno Flume and Irrigation Company. He later served as president of the organization beginning in 1894, while also holding directorships with the Pine Box and Lumber Company of San Francisco and the California Sugar and White Pine Agency.
Under his leadership, the company surveyed and built an impressive forty and one-quarter mile flume from Stevenson Creek to Clovis, constructing a sixty-foot dam and establishing vital mountain mills, planing mills, box factories, and dry kilns. He married Lena A. Roberts in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on December 6, 1883, and together they had three daughters: Grace, Ethel, and Doris. Beyond his vast industrial undertakings, he was an active Mason and a dedicated member of the Elks, the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, and the Sequoia Club. Following a highly productive career that helped shape the infrastructure of the region, he passed away on Christmas Day in 1907. His energy, experience, and pioneering spirit remain historically significant in the development and global trade reach of Fresno County.
