Shannon, Jefferson M.
Jefferson M. Shannon, born on November 8, 1831, was an early California pioneer, undersheriff, and prominent real estate agent who played a vital role in shaping Fresno County. Raised and educated in Missouri, he traveled across the plains in 1849 as an eighteen-year-old teamster, arriving at Fort Sutter in the spring of 1850. He initially engaged in mining, butchering, and farming in places like Vacaville before moving to Millerton around 1859 to work as a blacksmith. During his time at Millerton, he married Rebecca Margaret Baley, the town’s first school teacher, with whom he raised four children: Mary Idria, Scott A., Sidney J., and Leland Stanford Shannon. While working at the forge, he served as deputy sheriff of Fresno County under Scott Ashman until 1867, establishing himself as a key local figure during the region’s early formation.
As the railroad expanded into Fresno, Jefferson M. Shannon became the first local station agent and established a close association with the Big Four of the Southern Pacific railway. Serving as the general townsite agent for the Pacific Improvement Company, he managed the laying out and sale of town sites spanning from El Paso, Texas, to San Francisco, California. Through his direct influence, the company donated land for Fresno’s Court House Park as well as the initial sites for the local Catholic Church and St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church. He eventually acquired property north of Selma to plant a ninety-acre vineyard, becoming a pioneer planter of malaga grapes in the region. After relocating to Alameda in 1888, he passed away on June 8, 1902, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the economic and civic development of Fresno County.
