Sequeira, Antone George
Antone George Sequeira, born in Pico, Azores Islands, on January 5, 1856, was a pioneer sheep man who contributed to the agricultural and civic growth of Fresno County. He arrived in Boston on May 10, 1872, worked on a Rhode Island farm, and later traveled via Panama to San Francisco in December 1874. Upon arriving in Fresno County, he worked on a San Joaquin River ranch and helped construct the Madera Flume and Lumber Company flume. In 1880, he bought 1,370 ewes from the elder Blasingame and partnered with Mr. Vanderlip before building an independent sheep operation that grew to 6,200 sheep.
Throughout his career, Mr. Sequeira continuously invested in regional real estate, beginning with six acres on A Street in 1883 and expanding to a 160-acre ranch in Wildflower. From 1893 to 1901, he served as a member of the Fresno police force while acquiring numerous city lots across blocks 315 and 329. He later acquired and developed a 160-acre ranch in Kings County near Hanford in 1918. Father to six children across two marriages, he was affiliated with the I. D. E. S. and U. P. E. C. fraternal organizations before retiring in Fresno to manage his holdings.
