Seacord, David
David Seacord, born in West Davenport, New York, on October 15, 1847, was a pioneer who helped develop the San Joaquin Valley. Raised in the Catskill Mountains, he later moved to Ohio and served in two Ohio regiments during the Civil War, participating in major actions including the siege of Petersburg. Following his military service, he worked as an engineer in the West Virginia oil fields, manufactured bee hives in Missouri, and labored in Colorado before settling in California in 1876. On August 15, 1877, he was hired by Tom Beatty to open the first coal mine at Coalinga, where he drove the first tunnel and mined the initial coal.
After his mining work at Coalinga, David Seacord settled in Warthan Canyon, Fresno County, where he and his partner, John Bray, established an apiary and a thriving general merchandise store. The business expanded into adjoining counties, and by 1884, their operations were successful enough to ship seventy-five tons of honey in a single year. Following the death of John Bray in 1902, David bought his late partner interest, closed the store, and focused his efforts on farming, horticulture, and bee culture. He successfully developed an orchard on his 1,500 foot altitude ranch, building an independent life through continuous hard work. His enterprise and pioneer spirit made him a highly esteemed and influential figure throughout his local community.
