Scott, Jay
Jay Scott, born in Will County, Illinois, on January 13, 1850, was brought to California as a two-year-old child when his parents, J. H. Scott and Anna Chamberlain, crossed the plains with ox-teams in 1852. He grew up in the Sacramento Valley, where he attended local schools before entering various commercial ventures across the state. In 1876, he worked in railroading through Fresno County, later running a hotel in Cazadero, Sonoma County, for two years. He permanently settled in Fresno in 1888, where he engaged in business before purchasing and developing 200 acres of farmland into valuable orchards and vineyards.
Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Jay Scott served two effective terms as the sheriff of Fresno County from January 1893 to January 1899. A staunch Republican and active member of the Elks and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, he took a strong interest in public affairs and local community development. In his personal life, he married Ida Burch in Tulare County, and together they raised children Oliver C., Myrtle, Philip B., and a young son named Jay Scott who passed away at four years old. His dedicated public service and long-standing residence in Fresno made him a well-known and respected citizen throughout the county.
