Schultz, Mrs. Mary
Mrs. Mary Schultz, born March 26, 1861, at Rheinpfalz in Germany, came from a wealthy vineyardist family as the daughter of Jacob Langfinger and Elizabeth Koehler. Brought up in the Lutheran Church, she immigrated to Firebaugh, California, in 1877 alongside her sister Kate and brother-in-law Philip Koehler, who worked for Miller and Lux. During this period on the Columbia Ranch, she often interacted with and served meals to Henry Miller before moving with her family to Merced and eventually Fresno. In Fresno, she met William H. Schultz, a Saxony native and former cabin boy who had survived Panama fever in 1864 before establishing himself as a major landowner and leading sheepman in the Elkhorn district.
Following their marriage on March 21, 1882, the couple managed extensive holdings near Burrel, where William raised thousands of sheep and served in public positions such as the Grand Jury until his death on March 19, 1895. Mrs. Schultz raised two sons, William Henry, who became a mechanical engineer, and Armand W., who grew into an extensive farmer and stock-raiser managing over 600 acres of the family land. Divided between her residence in Fresno and the home ranch north of Burrel, she actively participated in the Unitarian Church of Fresno and engaged in religious, patriotic, and sociological work. Her life stands as an enduring reflection of the prominent immigrant families who shaped the agricultural and civic landscape of early Fresno County.
