Schmall, John Peter
John Peter Schmall, born in Stahl Colony, Samara, Russia, on November 12, 1874, was a versatile businessman and rancher who achieved great success in Fresno County. The youngest of twelve children born to farmers George and Marie Schmall, he grew up working on the family farm and married Elizabeth Scheidt in their native country on October 20, 1896. The young couple emigrated to America in November 1897, initially settling in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he worked for the railroad before relocating to Fresno on July 4, 1899. After continuing his railroad employment with both the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific lines, he transitioned into a highly profitable series of real estate and agricultural transactions. Over the next two decades, he successfully bought, improved, and sold multiple properties, including a livery yard, an E Street grocery store, residential houses he built himself, and several ranches across Biola, Madera County, Dinuba, and Reedley.
In June 1917, Mr. Schmall purchased an eighty-acre ranch in the Barstow district, eventually selling twenty acres and dedicating the remaining sixty acres to a highly cultivated vineyard and orchard of malagas, muscats, and peaches. Alongside his demanding agricultural pursuits, he and his wife raised ten surviving children named Katie, Mollie, Peter, George, Fred, Elizabeth, Marie, Harry, and twins Henry and Albert. He established a deep footprint in his community by serving as a trustee for the branch Lutheran Church at Barstow and investing as a stockholder in the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. His life stands as a testament to energy and initiative, highlighting the meaningful contributions of immigrant families to the agricultural growth of California.
