Scheidt, George
George Scheidt, born in Steplnoia, Samara, Russia, on June 5, 1867, was a well-informed rancher who achieved success through persistent effort and dedication to agriculture. The son of a local farmer, he experienced frontier life as a young child before returning to his birthplace, where he eventually learned the shoemaker trade at fifteen and married Katie Schiebelhut. In 1891, he moved with his wife and child to Persia to practice his trade alongside horticulture and viticulture, though he ultimately returned to Russia before emigrating to the United States in 1896. After arriving in Cincinnati and working in shoe manufacturing, he relocated to the Pacific Coast, where he labored in lumber yards, planing mills, and building construction while gradually establishing himself as a landowner.
Through careful investments, Mr. Scheidt purchased, developed, and sold profitable vineyards in both the Locan district and the Highland Colony, installing modern pumping plants and residences on the properties. During this period of growth, he also spent five years serving as a janitor for the Edgerly Building to support his farming endeavors. He eventually purchased a modern bungalow residence on F Street and acquired a twenty-acre orchard and vineyard on Olive and McKinley avenues to raise peaches, Thompson seedless grapes, and alfalfa. A dedicated family man and superintendent of the Sunday School at Zion Lutheran Church, he raised eight surviving children named Louisa, Henry, Mollie, Paulina, George, John, Lydia, and Dora.
