Sanford, Louis Childs, Rt. Rev. D.D.
The Right Reverend Louis Childs Sanford, Doctor of Divinity, was born in Bristol, Rhode Island, on July 27, 1867. He was educated in the public schools of his home town before graduating from Brown University in 1888 and the Episcopal Theological School of Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1892. Upon arriving in California, he served the congregations of Selma and Fowler in Fresno County, eventually directing the construction of the church edifice in Fowler. He then spent years as a rector in Salinas and San Francisco, and later served as the secretary of the Eighth Missionary Department of the Episcopal Church. In October 1910, he was elected without opposition as the first bishop of the newly constituted Episcopal Missionary District of San Joaquin.
This central California district encompassed fourteen counties, and the bishop officially selected Fresno as the see city during the primary convocation in May 1911. Under his superb leadership, the debt of the church was liquidated and new missions were established to support the growing population, including the Mission of the Holy Spirit. In his personal life, Bishop Sanford was married to London native Ellison Vernon, and together they had three children named Edward, Mary, and Royal. Beyond his ecclesiastical duties, he served as the treasurer of the Fresno Chapter of the Red Cross, actively participated in war and relief work, and held a fraternal membership in the Zeta Psi.
